re Hongkong business.

Since addressing youmlast on the 16th and 19th ulto.. a reply to which letters you are probably deferring until we can write you more definitely, we have further communicated with the parties concerned in China, and are now ina position to state definitely that the proposed arrangement with Mr. Richter, to which we assented, is unfortunately impossible of execution and that we have to fall back upon the alternative outlined

in our above mentioned letters.

In a previous letter we wrote you that Mr. Schlueter consents to such alternative, namely to act as our agent. Mr. Fuhrman has since written to you on the 25th ult. (copy of which letter he sent us) that we would submit to you further proposals and he informs us that he agrees o the matter being

now left solely in our hands. This we think we ought to tell

you as, although this gentleman'e firm must be eliminated

from the contract, you, who are in a neutral position in regard to the matter, will probably not care to do nything which he

would dislike.

Mr. Steeger in Shanghai has meanwhile been informed by

Mr. Fuhrman bu cable dated the 3rd inat:

"Act according Sanders' wish"

in reply to a cable advices from Mr. Fuhrman about the altered

position.
